Dear Sir or Madam,

words of praise to the effect that “our industry is unique” are often heard in get-togethers with relatives, friends and neighbors. However, on looking deeper, this statement is sometimes quickly put into perspective by mentioning such issues as constant work overload, poor pay as well as frequent work on public holidays and on weekends etc. In these get-togethers, I personally cannot resist praising the benefits of our industry, the precast industry – garnished by positive examples from practice. In mid-August, for example, I was on a business trip to distant Brazil – but still to good friends. Apart from the Concrete Show in São Paulo, I visited four precast plants in the south of this gigantic country: Antares Pré-Fabricados, Torri Engenharia, Construtora Engemold and Sistemas Construtivos do Brasil.
I wish you much pleasure in reading this newsletter.
Yours Silvio Schade

Concrete recycling: Building instead of dumping

Figure: Julia Bergmeister

The rubbish dumps on the site of the former „Bavaria-Kaserne“ are already now some meters high. Three year ago, the demolition works of the old barracks building erected by the Wehrmacht (former armed forces of Germany) had started there. The demolition will leave a total of 300,000 tons of concrete, brick and mortar remains. Rubble is a highly interesting object of research for Andrea Kustermann. Once a week, the university professor visits the construction site in order to take samples: „We use the pilot project that is funded by the local government of the Bavarian capital with an amount of 35,000 Euros to find out how a hundred percent of the concrete resulting from the demolition of the old buildings can be recycled.“ A hundred percent ...

Vinhomes Landmark 81: height record with Tekla and Trimble

Figure: Trimble

For the design of the skyscraper, the British architectural office Atkins drew its inspiration from the traditional bundle of bamboos, the symbol of strength and solidarity. Situated not far from the Saigon River, the tall building accommodates both luxury apartments and residential facilities, as well as a 5-star hotel, a shopping center, a cinema, and an indoor skating rink. Since its founding 15 years ago, the Vietnamese building contractor Coteccons has specialized in sustainable planning and building services. It was the first time that a project of this scale was awarded to a local contractor. Coteccons already implemented BIM solutions four years ago and was awarded, shortly afterwards, the third prize ...
