Dear Sir or Madam,

difficult times and setbacks, maybe even short-time work, from which our industry was also not spared in 2020. That can have a very demotivating effect. The start into the new year is therefore a good opportunity for taking a close look at the topic of motivation – in particular, employee motivation. Motivation is defined as the sum of motives that encourages an individual to act. It is driven by the aim of attaining specific goals. A first step towards boosting motivation, for example, could be improving the working environment. Just as decisive is how management communicates with their staff. Staff members must feel that they can trust their superiors and need not be afraid of a clarifying talk, even in critical situations. For good and open communication to succeed, much empathy is needed.
In this sense I wish you a motivated start into the new year and wish you much enjoyment in reading this newsletter.
Yours Karla Knitter

Cast stone opens up new options in monument protection

Figure: Dyckerhoff

The successful reconstruction of the belfry of Löwenburg castle in Kassel is a sensational example for the use of cast stone in the preservation of historical monuments. For a long time, Löwenburg castle, that was originally built of tuff, had led a dull existence as a permanent renovation case. Only the idea to use cast stone to reproduce the tuff gave rise to the impetus needed for the reconstruction. The mix design for the cast stone/concrete block developed at the Material Testing Institute of the University of Kassel is based on Dyckerhoff Weiss white cement as binder. The artificial tuff was manufactured at the Bad Langensalza facility of Dyckerhoff Transportbeton Thüringen/Germany. The company in charge with the cast stone works, Denkmalpflege ...

Bolted connections for a huge warehouse in Spain

Figure: Peikko

Booming online business requires investments in the logistics infrastructure. Amazon meets the growing demand with a 100,000 m2 warehouse. A soon-to-be logistics hub to serve in the Madrid area, the Amazon warehouse rises three-storey high above the ground floor. The entire frame was designed with precast columns, beams and hollow-core slabs. Thanks to previous successes, the precaster Tecnyconta-Consolis chose Peikko. “With more than 400 columns with a length of 22 meters each, using bolted connections was a logical choice. Peikko’s solution increases work safety and reduces the risk of accidents,” says Óscar López de Sola, Technical Office Manager of Tecnyconta-Consolis. Having such a quantity of columns to ...

Virtually an all-rounder among the concretes

Due to the reduction ...
